Most stainless steel is softer by far than a hook. I carry a pair of dikes to cut hooks with if necessary. If you have to cut a hook try cutting it at the loop where the line goes, or if it's a treble cut the loop, it's not tempered there. Although there are stainless plyers with side cutters, I doubt they would last long cutting hooks.

You're probably right.. Just for some reason I thought there was a stainless alloy that was able to be heat treated to a near tool steel hardness. But I'm no metallurgist so most likely I'm just wrong.

Knipex, expensive but will cut 8/0 musky hooks better than a 1300$ surgical diagonal cutter

Nothin cuts as good as these...used in the upholstery business and cuts through hooks with one hand with ease.

D-Barbs have carbide cutting inserts, just the handle is SS. Have had a set for years without having to use them yet. I got them to get hooks out of myself, not fish.

I have been able to use the 'thru the gills' technique would considerable success for several years. Actually I cannot remember when I last could not find success with this method. Never been one to subscribe to the theory that the hook would break down in a few days. Perhaps it does but I like the idea of getting it out of the fish

I carry hemostats, long needle nose, and titanium hook cutters. Use the first two all the time, luckily haven't needed the last.
