Gear oil change. 2017 250 HO

Friend of mine bought a new boat this spring with this engine. He was told the lower unit gear oil never needs changed and that customer cant even check it because there are no plugs. Fact or fiction?

Fiction! If it is a gen1 it should be done every three years or 300 hours, gen2 every 5 years or 500 hours.

If it's a G2 then there is a drain behind the water screens. There is a reservoir behind the starboard panel to check level and condition.

Thank you guys for the info. 500 hours seems like a long sirvice interval.

Where do people come up with that crap?

Reminds me of the old urban legend from years ago that Rolls Royce cars were so well engineered that the hood (bonnet) was welded shut.

Changing every year is old school but effective just like changing your trucks oil every 3000 miles.

The point of the reservoir on the G2 is so you can easily check the level and condition. If its black or milky or low that will show in the bottle.
