Venice 08/03-08/06

The Venice trip with my son turned out great! Pulled my Bullet down on thursday for a 3 day trip. Redfish were the focus, although we had a few bass in the mix during the trip. Ended up catching 113 reds in 3 days! Was very happy as we are saltwater rookies and my first trip down to Venice without a guide. Caught about half on chatterbaits and flukes, rest on jighead and dead shrimp. Tons of catfish, some sheephead, flounder and a few bass also. Best time of day was mid afternoon at low tide . Looked for bulls on Sunday, but the wind hammered us all day. Tough to find much,and i really didnt know what i was doing on those. Cant wait to get back again. Son's first time catching reds. Hes hooked on the place now. Yall really have it made down there for fishing!

Yessir it's a one of a kind of place. Few places where you can fish all day on a weekend and never see another boat.

Thanks! Yeah , there were plenty of boats , trucks and trailers in the marina each morning. But after we ran a bit, hardly saw anyone!

Also, one thing i noticed with the inshore guides down there. They all mostly came back to the marina by noon. Same thing our guide did last year. We all caught plenty of fish, but a full day trip is only half day usually. lol

Been fishing down there since the 60's. The area is still really good, but would not hold a candle to the 60's and 70's. You did not have to leave the launch back then, and load the boat with whatever you wanted. Game Warden stopped us one time..my neighbor and I had 4 ice chest of fish. He wanted us to take them out and count them, and then put them back. I told him...you are the one who wants to check them...you take them out and count them. I told him what the one ice chest held, and the first one was right on it, so he told us to go ahead...LOL. We had 7 different species of fish that day.

I agree! i just dont fish for flounder much. My son got the restaurant at the marina to cook it for him for dinner. They did a great job.
