Trailer winch-which way do you guys wind the strap?

My new and old winch wound the strap on the top. Wondering if anyone ever wound it so it wraps from the bottom? Would seem to hold the trailer “down” and on the bow roller a little better. From the top, it just pulls it straight into the roller. I have always used a supplemental bow tie down strap to minimize the bow from bouncing slightly on and off the bow roller.

I always figured which ever way it matched up the best.
The one I have now works better from the bottom. It definatley holds it down on this one.

Interesting, I kinda want to go from the bottom now... as simple as pulling it all out and going the other way?

On mine I am sure I can only wrap one way. When I stand beside it, looking at it getting ready to winch in the spool turns counter-clockwise. The only way then for the strap to wrap on is from the top. To have the strap go on from the bottom, the spool would have to turn clockwise which would be against the ratchet palls.

My winch only clicks in one direction. It must get wound on top. Just like toilet paper roll should be.

After 2 kids, and 5 grandkids my wife has taught me to mount the toilet paper roll so that it pulls off from the bottom. Else the kids will have it off in no time once they start spinning it like a ferris wheel.

you will have to reverse the direction the spool turns when you crank it. My winch has an anti reverse that locks in both directions. If yours free spool in one direction you can’t do this.

    But why change it?

I’ve got the f2 so it’s reversible. But winding from the bottom seems like it would hold the boat down a little more than from the top. (Down to the trailer that is)

I just put my Fulton F2 on and the only way my boat winch can work is winding under. Even going under the hook touches the bottom of my bow roller. I’m trying to figure out a way to adjust it now cause I don’t like them touching. I do love the winch though!

yep, good point. I noticed yesterday that the metal winch hook hits the bow roller stop pretty good. I’ll be rewinding mine so it pulls from the bottom. Thx guys!

Which ever way I just put it on. Didn't pay any attention to what the hell I was doing.

I do the same with the same winch. Going from the top the hook would dig into my roller.

I installed an F2 on my boat and decided to switch it to wind under... However, I do have to wind it the other way because I decided to keep the level wind on the Port side.
