Neither do outboard engines, most hours are in a much lower rpm band.

Previous 2001 Mercury had over 700 current 1989 Evinrude doesn't have a hour meter but as far as I can tell it hasn't been touched.

I guess that depends on usage. That is not the case for me and I assume not the case for most bass boat owners. I turn 3500 to get on plane and almost always cruise above 4000.

    2005 Mercury Pro XS 225, 700 hours.

I replaced the original compressor at 690 hours. That was in the spring and I had to take it to a dealer to run the oil pump prime sequence and they read the hours then. So, here's what I don't get. Yamaha has this stellar reputation (at least around here) as being the most trouble free longest lasting outboards. But, if you read thru this thread that's not the case at all. Looks Like Merc has the most high hour motors out there in BBC land anyway.

My spare boat (now) is a 1988 Stratos with an XP 150 that I believe is still virgin. I've put at least 5 hours a week on it 40 weeks a year for the last 10 years and it was well used when I bought it.

I got my boat June 1st and the printout said 122 hours on my 06 Evinrude Etec 90, I don’t think he used the boat much, it was like new! I’ve been using her twice a week since I got her so I’m probably in the 140 range now, the tm gets much more use!

It's because you are thinking of Bass boats only. Go to a saltwater forum and ask this same question. We don't pile on hours anything like they do...in fact, under 1000 is practically like new. The Yamaha F series and Suzuki motors dominate, many running 3-4000 hours. Heck, my Evinrude mechanic in Portland, Or has a customer with over 1800 hours on a pair of G2's. What we think of as high hours is a joke in the Bass boat world, although I would agree that we run them at a higher rpm on average and therefore or generally harder on them

Saltwater boats are used in a completely different fashion than a bass boat. I don't feel like its a good comparison. Most troll for hours in a single trip and that adds extremely high hours with out the wear and tear of the same motor with half the hours at a higher RPM. However, there are a metric butt ton of Yamaha saltwater motors out there with high hours.
