    Trees dying off

Took down three trees this morning. They slowly died over a period of years and more are in the process of dying. All the same kind of tree, maybe alder or ash. Don't know trees too well. I did notice small ants on the bark when they came down.
Anybody else see this happening? Is there something I can use to treat these trees? I am surrounded by woods and these trees are all growing at the edge of the treeline. They won't really be missed that much, but if I can save some I would like to.

I lost about 1,000 pines a few years ago due to a previous year drought. I'm not familiar with those type of trees but can they get an infestation like a pine can with beetles?

In PA all the ash is being cut down and moving it around is restricted due to the Emerald Ash Borer.

There is a native ash borer also. The hole they bore is how you tell which one you have. Emerald borer has a D shaped hole and the native borer has a round hole. At least that's what the USDA bug guy told me.

It more likely poplars they are planted in subdivisions as they grow extremely quickly 3-6' per year. But they also only have a life expectancy of about 15-20 years. Short for a tree.

Talk to your local county extension agent and get recommendations for native trees for your area. Red oaks and pin-oaks are hardy shade trees for most temperate climates.
    You can lead a horticulture,
but you can't make her think.

I don’t agree with this statement, not for native trees. I’ve been on this land for 47 years and none of the wood line poplars have died. I have some that are nearly three feet across at the stump now.

If your trees are opposite branching and have a compound leave, you have ash. Emerald ash borer is your reason for tree mortality.
