Will 18 vdc hurt my Helix 10?

I just installed a new Helix 10 sonar/gps unit and have it hooked up to the starting battery. I have a volt gauge on my dash that says my battery is charging at 18 volts when I am running the big motor wide open. Is that too much voltage for the electronics? Will 18 vdc hurt the Helix 10? It is a 1993 Johnson 150 hp could the rectifier be bad or is charging at 18 volts normal. I know on cars upper limit is around 14.4 volts for charging.

Specs say 10.8-20 VDC, should be ok.

You need to repair your outboard or get an accurate gauge.

Check the cranking battery with a Multimeter, both before and after starting. It shouldn't be above 14.4VDC if your tach is acting crazy also good sign the VR is bad.

I just read that also in the helix 10 manual on page 254 under specs control head power input 10 - 20 VDC
That eases my pain, but 18 vdc is not good for the life of a wet cell 12v battery.

Technically, yes, but consumer equipment is known for taking liberties with nominal vs. actual voltages so be sure to verify what the actual voltage is.

Also, they aren't going to run it for a long time. Typical one would run a typical unit for a couple of hours.

If you are charging at 18 vdc, there's something wrong ! Either your gauge or your alternator/regulator is bad. Hopefully, it's the gauge !!

Also, those units have an over voltage shut off as well as low voltage shut off.
