    G2 Question

So maybe a dumb question but here it is.... what’s the difference between the 150 and the 150HO? Displacement looks the same along with weight, what is the HO side? Lower unit?

Also, kind of shopping the idea of repowering my Ranger 2003 185VS from the Yamaha 150 OX66, it’s rated to 175HP, is there any real gain over a 150HO? Really like the G2 and I’m not sure you can get it with the 175.

No e-tec G2 175 that I can find. I re-powered a 2004 Stratos 285Pro XL to a 150HO G2. Currently have 18 hours on it. Coming from a Johnson 150 carb motor all I can say is the 150HO has some stout torque and mid range to top end jerk your head back power. I’ve been impressed and I’m still working on props and motor height adjustments. With that said however if my boat was rated at 175hp max I would be wanting to go that route if anything for possible re-sale value. You can go to Boattest.com and see how the G2 150HO stacks up against a Yamaha 200 4 strokes. The G2 150 HO reportedly puts out 10% higher HP with the HO tuning, so 165 HP at the prop shaft.

The only difference between an Evinrude 2.7L G2 150, 150HO, 175, and 200 is the software the factory loads into the computer, all mechanically identical. I drove the exact same boat with a 150HO and a 200 and there was about an 8 mph increase in top end speed where low and mid range performance remains comparable. Looking at the gauge it looks like they just dump more fuel to it on the top end to get better performance, if you pull back on the throttle some they are both very close. There is a 175hp G2 available and with my experience with the other 2.7L G2s id say there will probably be a decent increase in performance, probably no as dramatic as the 200 but you will see some increase. Also a 175hp engine is usually worth more then a 150hp engine for resale even if that 150 is a HO.

It is always best to max your boats HP rating for performance, resale value, and generally speaking efficiency. Boats that struggle to get on plane and run on pad aren’t near as efficient or fun..

HO gives you the upper 10% of the spec'd HP tolerance, so it's a 165HP. Outboard engines are spec'd at +/- 10% HP...

Looks like they took the 175 G2 out of their lineup. No longer on Evinrude's website.
