    Question 190FS setup

Friend of mine is having setup issues with his 2000 190FS with a Johnson 150. Right now he has a 6" plate set at 3.5 below the pad and turning a 23 renegade. The prop was just done over by Mark so that is good and I set his prop to pad height. The numbers he's telling me aren't adding up. He's seeing 48mph on the GPS and 5400 RPM. That's some crazy high slip numbers on the prop so I'm thinking he's trimming too fast and not letting the prop bite OR there are other issues. I'm thinking a 23 Tempest would be better choice of a prop but his current setup should be in the high 50's. I told him to trim the engine to level, eye ball it and mark a spot on the trim gauge. I said to use that as a reference point to trim to when you make a run. once he trim to that point then start watching his speed and rpms. bump trim up as necessary for his best numbers. Any other tips or advice to get his boat setup properly?

Sounds like you better hop in the boat to see what it really can do and then teach him.

A 150 on a 19 foot boat is not going to be a speed demon....drop the motor one notch and see what happens if it seems to get better drop it another notch and see.

I think driver input is playing a part. Yes a 150 is not going to push that boat like a 200 would but I think high 50's is where it should be running and maybe even 60 if he's not loaded down.

I may go up and run it for him but I would think at 3.5 below the pad is a good starting point and go from there.

Joe, I belive you are correct. But, Not sure of the differences compared to my 1993 190 with the early 150 Intruder.. I'm thinking the later year 190's, especially a F&S, behave much differently. You well know my rig is a consistent upper 50's any day, and 60-61 mph on a good day. I believe I'm around three and a half inches below pad, with a 24P Raker.

Thanks! He's going to try some things this weekend to try and get some better numbers out of it.

Johnrude doesn’t run as high as a merc. 3 1/2” is probably gonna be a little high

Thanks Pat! He's going to lower it and see how it runs.

To add: my boat is very weight sensative. If he’s got all of bass pro in the lockers and middle front storage it will definitely affect it. Be conservative on the amount of tackle you haul.

He's runnin it today so I'll find out how it worked out. What kind of bow lift do you see with your 190? When he is running next to me you can see the engine trimmed to the moon but the bow is running flat.

Joe, my 190 runs real flat. At least it did the first year i got her. Craig went out with me years ago and took some picks while i was running. I added 5.5 inch jackplate and different prop, but i have no idea if it got better lift. A couple mph better, but still think she's flat..Smooth, but flat.

He ran the boat today and got better numbers. Dropped the plate 1/2" and gained 5mph, 52GPS but he forgot to see what his RPM's were. We are on the right track so he's going to try and lower it another 1/2" and see how it runs. My guess is right around th 4" BTP is going to be the sweet spot. I'll keep you posted and let you know what he comes up with but I think I can get a little more out of it if I was there.

    Dave,
You have the entire Wacky Worm bait shop in that boat! Thats why that bow won't fly!! hahahaha
