For what it costs and the risks I'd rather just pay someone.

I'd never get any work here for those prices. 125ish for a single depending on the drive and 200 for 2.
Jersey is expensive. Our service call to come out is 125.00 for resi. Not sure what the boss gets for commercial since I am the resi guy.

Back from kids camp. So, I’ll order the parts as directed. It’ll be sometime later this week before I’ll be able to install anyway.

Good luck and be careful. 18-24" winding bars that fit the spring cones without much play and that go all the way to the bottom are needed for the sake of safety. Once you get enough turns on the springs, (1 turn for each foot of door height) you want to stretch them slightly to prevent the coils from binding. You do this by pulling the bar towards the stationary cone and tapping the other bar against the one you have in the winding cone while holding pressure on the winding cone. Give it about 1/2-1" then tighten the set screws. Run them in until they touch the shaft and give them about 1 full turn each after contact. Test the door to see that it balances properly. I like to put about 1/4 to 1/2 turns extra due to the spring relaxing over time.

When you start winding the springs, put some electrical tape on the winders to use as a visual aid to make sure you have the winder bottomed out in the hole EVERY time before you put pressure on it. Could save your life.

I do a lot of DIY stuff at the house and on my vehicles. A lot! The risk/reward for something that someone will come today or tomorrow and fix for $125 is simply not even remotely an option. When mine broke a couple of months ago I looked into doing it myself and then called a local door company. They were out next day and for $125 and 30 minutes the job was done.

re-wiring the electrical panel? installing your first gas tank and appliances?
I'm thinking it needs to be something at least as death defying without the right know-how as garage door springs.

But seriously, congrats on getting it done and not hurting yourself

Already rewired 220 dryer. I would like to run wiring to my deck I’m re-doing though.

We used to do the big freight doors at the airlines. One of the funniest things that happened was a guy was winding one of the big springs and had greased the crap out of it. He had it almost done and lost control of it. Sprayed him down big time. If the springs on my door let go I will probably just let some kid do it rather than standing on a tall ladder and doing it myself. Getting lazy!

Just had mine replaced yesterday. #218 spring broke in the middle of the night and I thought someone was in my garage stealing my boat. Sounded like a shotgun going off.
Paid $155.00 to have it replaced. Took about 45 minutes. He also reinforced the top of the garage door.

One or both springs as both are recommended when one dumps.

Yep, it will cost less in the long run because the one that didn't break will have to be dishcharged to change the broken one. While you have them both unbolted, it will take about 5 minutes to replace the other side. When the guy comes out next time, it's the same price as changing one spring the last time.
