    1983 Ranger 350v Mariner 150hp

I have a 1983 350v with a Mariner 150. I don't think it's as quick as it should be, but may be wrong. Top speed on GPS is 48mph at 5100 RPMs after trimming up. No jack plate, prop is a laser ll 48 16546 a40 21p. Thoughts?

It seems like it should be doing a lot better. I run a 1984 Mariner 150 on a 1984 DynaTrak 179 also no jack plate and a 23 Tempest. By myself, I top out at 58-59mph GPS and 5900 - 6000 rpms. With 2 people and their extra stuff, its about 55-56 mph at 5700-5800 rpms. I usually run by myself and don't carry a bunch of stuff in the boat that I never use. You might want to do a compression check on the motor to verify its health. Also make sure the throttle cable is adjusted to fully open up the carbs. Check to make sure your hull hasn't become water logged and heavy over the years.

Hull doesn't seem water logged, I just ordered a compression tester. Mine has kicked the bucket, I am checking it as soon as I get it.

Empty the boat, throw on a tempest. Give it a run. Prop to pad measurement?

May have found part of the problem, all cylinders checked 110psi....except one. Couldn't check it because the threads are worn out and the tester won't get tight. Plug is loose in the hole allowing compression bypass. Looks like I will be fixing that first and see how much difference it makes.

Got it all fixed...finally. Replaced head with bad threads, new power pack, new stator, new plugs. 55mph at 5900rpms and one heck of a hole shot.

Great job, I love that year of Rangers! My dad had a ‘78 with the round Mercury...I remember being a kid and thinking how cool that boat was.
