    Heads up on 300XS..

Took my nephew fishing last week and the motor quit like it was starved for fuel and the buzzer sounded.
Pulled the cowl to find the serpentine belt had shredded. We fished our way back to the dock and loaded with the troll motor.
Long story short-- the stud which holds the idler assembly had backed out of the block to the point it let the belt get under it and ruined the belt while chewing the bottom off the pulley.. I don't think this happened very fast so I'm sure it was eating away the last time I was out. I'm hoping there is not more problems to come from debris being sucked into the intake. I spent half a day pulling the lower cowl and meticulously cleaning everything. I posted this on the Merc forum and one guy allowed he's seen it twice before

To add insult to injury I hit a deer that morning before daylight--she did put some wrinkles in the drivers side of my truck. My poor nephew who has been jumping up and down for me to take him fishing... Said: I bet you never take me again !!!!

Wow, I guess I better check mine. Hope you were convincing with your nephew that he had nothing to do with this chain of events.
Are you going to fish the Smith RV and Marine Tournament on Ute the first of August?

This nephew reminds me of me many years ago. He has the bug !!!!!
No way I will let this slow his desire to learn.

Smith's T- pays so good, If I get the chance I'll fish it. Got a check 2 years ago but did not fish last year.
They put on a great T- its just so hot and crowded for a small lake. They also put it off limits the week prior which is great but they let everyone pre fish the day before--So it kills a lot of the bite with that many boats

Mike, thanks for the info. I will be looking at mine. If I knew Ute at all I might consider the Tourn but I have been there 3 times in the last 20 yrs and it hasn't been good to me. The off limits out here for the Bass Team Trail and ABA is why I quite fishing them, if time allows and I can get on the water I go and don't have to worry. I hate pre fish on friday, like you said it kills the spots.

Did it cause any other problems ?
My main concern is how long had this been going on and how much was sucked into the air intake
I'm also concerned that if it came loose once --- how soon before it does it again. Was told to use red Loctite; as I did but I figure that's what they used at the factory.

No other issues. Cleaned out all debris and used red loctite.

I'll keep my fingers crossed... Used red L-Tite.. and tightened the stud as much as I figured it could stand before stripping.
Will definitely put it on the regular check list.

Sure could be bad if this happened on one of the Mexico border lakes I fish about dark and 20 miles from a boat ramp..

How did you tighten the stud? Any special tools needed?

I found two nuts that fit and used one as a jam nut.
Also put some marks on it so I can check it now.

In all seriousness, might not hurt to do a leak down test as it’s hard to say what was ingested.

No kidding !! After installing new plugs and cleaning on it forever.. I fired it on the hose .. She coughed and sputtered for several seconds then smoothed out. Will get on the water once the holiday crowd goes home.

Mike, how far do you have to travel to find decent water to test your boat in there in Amarillo?

Have you tried White Lake down below Crosbyton, Tx? I grew up in the Kress/Plainview area and had a good night fishing that lake several years ago.
