Confused in Nebraska!!!
Hi guys. I'm a horrible mechanic so I'm looking for some advice. Is it possible to take the 25" midsection from an 89 Johnson 200hp and install it onto a 2004 evinrude 225 HO motor that now has a 20" shaft with fuel injection? The Johnson is carbonated if that makes any difference. The problem that I hate to admit is that my shaft isn't long enough....lol. I'm told that champion may be able to shed some light on things for me. Thanks again!!

Nope, different motors completely.
There are kits to reshaft your current motor.
This is a bass boat forum, what the heck are you putting a XL shaft on?

I have a 89 cajun esprit fish ski boat that had a 25"shaft on it when I bought it . I was told it was original motor but tonight was also told that in 1989 OMC didn't make a Johnson GT 200 with a 25" shaft. I purchased a 2004 evinrude 225 to empower my boat but it was a 20" shaft. Once I started running it, the 25" shaft off the old motor had much better trim characteristics and performance than my new motor with the 20" shaft. Since I'm not very knowledgeable about all the different boat/motor setups that are commonly used I'm assuming I need a long shaft on my boat

I would post pictures of the old and new motor but I dont know how on this forum

I was told champion would be able to give me a definite answer about the shaft swapping question. Is there a way to tag him in this post?

Fred hangs around the johnrude and champion boats forums.
I'll bet lunch your boat was built for a 20" motor. There's maybe been two or three boats built for 25" motors. Cajun wasn't one of them.
You might have the 20'' too high, if it's throwing a big roostertail and the steering is really stiff, you need to drop it down.

Pat, I'd buy you lunch anyway just to help me figure it all out. Lol. I dont throw a roostertail at all unless I raise the jackplate up and the steering isn't very stiff (dual cables...not hydrolic) unfortunately my hydraulic jackplate settles back down but I had to pin it so it didn't settle too low or the steering cable bracket would hit on the top of the metal transom cap

Ok, let's start at the basics. That's a big heavy boat, and needs a lot of grunt to get it up and going. Not insult just it is what it is.
What prop?
What are the results now? Max rpms/speed/how does it run? light and loose or stuck to the water?
The cables should not be hitting your jack plate at any trim setting, that's not right.
A picture might save a lot of bandwidth here. From the back, from the front showing plate/steering/cables.

It is a heavy boat. Prop is a stiletto 4 blade..23 pitch with I think 4 holes. Rpms wide open runs upwards of 6grand at about 53 or 54 mph according to my depth finder (no gps). When I did run full throttle it would cut out occasionally (rev limiter maybe?) I feel the top speed should be quite a bit faster but it has good low end grunt for popping up skiiers...but I have nothing to compare mine to. I dont have anyone who has a similar boat to talk too a about it. When I get home from work I'll take pictures and see if I can figure out how to upload them

Easiest way to do pictures is a 3rd party host, https://imgbb.com/ is a good one. Upload your pics, then use the embedded codes to put link on up here.
Stilletto is a turd prop, much better choices, but we'll pull all that apart later.

Seems like an expensive turf then...lol

If I was stuck in Nebraska I'd be confused too:)

It's always windy here because Kansas sucks and south Dakota blows!

Ok Pat, here are as many pictures that I think are relevant to this conversation. As you can see the steering cable bracket is as close as possible to not hitting the top rail. That is where I have it pinned at. The jack will go up but that's as low as it can be for damage purposes. The plastic sleeve is also coming out as you can see. Maybe I just need a new jackplate all together. The bottom fin on the motor doesn't quite get below the boat bottom...or is that called the pad? The bottom of the hull does step down about 3 or 4 inches lower than the back of the boat as you see it also. Tell me what else you want to see a picture of and I'll get it for you. Thanks

I’m on phone right now. Get on computer later.
All I can say is you have a lot of stuff going on.

Well, when you have time I'll take advice on some of this stuff.
