Just baffles me how many just get in a boat and go without knowing a thing about navigation or the "rules of the road."
Were you both in the same area? You have the right of way, but if you were blasting out of a cove perpendicular to the main channel and he was in main lake channel parallel to shore I could see a scenario where it would be courteous for you to let him pass in front of you.

I took the online course because I started fishing the Potomac river and there are markers, symbols and guides that I have never seen in PA. So I took the course online and have a card, and a lot more knowledge.

I was headed down the main channel at about 20 mph, he was coming out of a bay pulling a tube with kids on it and not really watching much ahead of him.

I think knowing the rules and expecting others to know is what can kill people. I just don't expect anyone to do it right, so I slow down. I'm sure I have made mistakes of my own over time, and a few bad decisions.

I haven't seen one yet that was free that is coast guard compliant and NASBLA compliant.

    Here's the one I took: https://www.boat-ed.com/

    Cost me $29.50

I thought it was a very nice, well organized, and well thought out coarse for only $29.50

I can't remember about Indiana, but in Kentucky if you pick up the fishing regulations book the boating guide is in it as well in hopes that some people might actually read it.

He is an idiot sounds like. I always watch skiers/tubers closely, can't count the number of times a jackwagon towing a tube cut me off.

Drive defensively....like you are invisible or everyone's out to get you...this is what I was taught in my motorcycle license course and it holds true on the water and when driving a car.....

I hate going across the lake when there are tubers and skiers out. Scares the living crap out of me.

There are courses out there that are approved and free.

I tried the boat-ed course 1st, and stopped when I started seeing a bunch of wrong info for VA, wrote/emailed them, and got my money back....they were teaching too much incorrect stuff for my likes.

    So be careful using them.

We give Drivers Ed. courses and require a drivers license for our roads; and you can't get people to give turn signals or stop at a stop signs either.

I've only been boating fresh water since '02. Before that I had more than 25 years on LI Sound and in the NY Bight. Now I realize in rivers, lakes and impoundments that you don't have the same "open water", but it has been my experience that folks on the fresh have no idea of how to conduct themselves on the water.
I can't even imagine what it must be like on weekends.

It's madness for sure. I don't know how the poker run guys are able to do it without incident, big group of go-fast boats running up and down KY Lake at high speeds with the helicopter in tow and all. I guess by being in a big group and multiple roostertails most people can see them coming far enough in advance.

I think they had about 50 in the one this weekend, raising money for Riley’s Children’s Hospital and The Wounded Warrior Project.

    You are not alone!

Title 33 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Part 83, look it up sometime. Some states do a good job getting the info out there, and others do not. It should be mandatory that all boaters read it prior to operating any vessel and carry a card showing compliance.
