I just received my XPTH 9 20 MSI T transducer, and the first thing I notice is the wedge shape. When leveling the install, which surface should I reference...top or bottom? Looks as though it will definitely make a difference.

The face of the transducer should be as close to parallel with the water's surface at idle speed as you can get. That is your only reference point other than the bottom of the body of water.

Thank you. That's what I figured, but didn't think it a bad idea to ask...especially before I start drilling a 1 1/8" hole through the step of my hull. LOL
I recall reading somewhere that they are sometimes installed backwards (curved end aft-ward). Is there anything to this and, if so, why?

You can install it reversed if you need to get the correct attitude. You can swap sides in the unit menu to offset doing that.
