    2004 198 Questions

I just purchased a new to me 2004 198 dual console. I am just about finished breaking in the new powerhead. The boat has a 225 Yamaha HPDI and it has a 25 tempest plus on it. Is this a good prop for this boat and motor? Should I try and find a Yamaha prop? Also what is a good starting point for the prop to pad for this setup? Has anyone run dual Talons on their 198 and what effect did it have on the boat? I am just look for good all around performance.

    Thanks,

    Clayton

I'd finish the break in and see what the Tempest can do on the Yamaha. Tempest is a very good prop. I'd start at 4" below the pad and work up from there. If you are not happy with the Tempest, I'd try a Yamaha Vented 25 T-1.

I have Dual 12' Talons on my 2008 200 Elite. They really killed my performance until I raised them as high as they would go with both top and bottom tightening bolts still in the track(slot). Our hulls are a little different and I'm running a Merc 225 Otimax Pro XS.

Are what hulls a little different? From reading on here, it seems the poles often have a negative effect on our boats.

I have dual 12' Talons on my 198 and it's fine. I did change out my batteries to ReLion lithiums which saved weight, plus I don't have a charger inside my boat anymore. I just don't see the need to drag around another 30lbs when it's never used except in my garage. I was on Lake Charlevoix a couple weeks ago and my boat was doing around 69mph. I don't need to go faster.

Got ya, Lake. Yes, the 198, 200 and 202 hulls, tho all 19'8", are a bit different from each other. Don't ask me how...I am not an engineer...I just know what I was told.

Good thinking - May do the same.

Thanks for the info. I have the motor broke in now. I am waiting on a new water pressure gauge and then I can start making some adjustments on the jack plate.

    Thanks

With the HPDI on it its a 3.3L block. they make their power down low. The HPDI motors like a bigger diameter prop like a T1 over a tempest.
when I had my 06 198 with a 06 225 HPDI it had a tempest on it. ran ok with the tempest but with a suggestion from a setup Guru that some remember (Todd at C&O then) he told me to put a T1 on it once I did that it woke the boat up. all around from hole shot to top end it was better as well as lift.

Todd knew his Champs and motors. He set up my 198...pretty perfect, IMO. Also helped with motor break-in. Good man!!!!
