50 hp johnson four stroke (2002-2003)

My brother is considering buying a small boat with a 50 johnson 4 stroke on it how dependable are these motors? Hasn't be ran much had to have over 2 grand work on it last fall. Would you be afraid of this engine or not. The work was done by a local shop who has a great reputation,
