VRO actually came out with the carb motors in the mid 1980s. It is pulse driven pump by way of the crank case pulses. It is however a combined fuel and oil pump. The FICHT, DFI, Etec G1 and G2 use separate oil and fuel pumps with the oil being shot by way of the oil manifold to areas on the block with a bit going to the fuel system to help lube the injectors.

Actually the 1984 VRO system was the first variable oil ratio device. For the 1997 model year, introduced in 1996 was the first FICHT which also utilized an onboard computer, ECU, to determine how much oil was needed at each particular moment and delivered that specific amount into the throttle body air streams.
In 1982 there was the Economixer in which the installer could program the fuel oil ratio going to the motor but it did not vary the amount while the motor was running.
