I've never had trailer brakes last on anything. I've got 3 tandems sitting here with bad brakes . I've redone them had the shop redo them and in less than a year a wheel cylinder blows or a actuator starts leaking. I might be snake bit but I personally HATE trailer brakes. My boats are light the heaviest is a 21XRD and I pull with a 2500 diesel so the shop pinned the actuator and ordered another one.

2x3 axle can be rated up to 3700-4200 lb depending on the spindles. The 4200 lb spindle is straight and will take the L68149 bearing both inner and outer. The 3700 lb axle uses a tapered spindle with L68149 on the inner bearing and L44649 on the outer. Springs will be either 4 leaf or 5 leaf 26" eye to eye.

FED DOT says can't exceed 40% of tow vehicle GVW or needs brakes.

I had a new 1989 Ranger Fisherman that came from the factory without brakes. Lived in Ohio and was told I did not need them. About 4 months after owning the boat I had to do a hard stop while towing at less than 35 miles per hour. Locked the brakes up and then got pushed right through the intersection. A tractor trailer truck coming through the intersection missed me by what seemed like inches. My rig weighed less than 2500 lbs. Ohio required an official weight at that time in order to get it licensed so I knew the boat/trailer weight. After that experience I said to myself "I can fix stupid" and I had brakes installed on that rig and as well as my newest Ranger. Maintenance on boat trailer brakes is easy and not worth the risk of not having them. Especially if you are only talking about a few dollars in extra expense.
