Just have to wait and see but with a v8 you would think it would have more power to turn bigger props.

Good point. Guess we will have to see who tries one first. I guess we are still in the trying different stuff on it stage.

So far that hasn't been the case on the few I've seen. They all turn smaller props but seem to be more efficient as they still get speed from them. It could be a whole new curve though. May need different motor heights or setbacks, etc

Smaller props because it has a higher rpm range.

We ran the sho with a 25 fury to 6100 never missed a beat 27 tempest was 6000.Hole shot was no problem on any prop we ran .The Sho is a power house ,just hope the Merc lives up to it.

Since the 27 Tempest was woirked that definitely helps. And it was on a different boat in a different time (winter) of the year that makes a difference. I believe the Mercury will be fine and already is fine. All the reports have noted how much torque it has. It has already ran in the summer just as fast the SHO did in the winter on the same type of boat. Now that is impressive. Merc seems to turn the props more efficiently. Prop size may not even be the issue as stated above this could be a whole new curve that Mercury has created. Enough said except for the new Merc haters. Lol.

What videos are you talking about? Was it on a Ranger 521? Also prop size may not even be the issue as stated above this could be a whole new curve that Mercury has created. Your beloved SHO is probably not going to win this one. And we are still in the early stages of running the new Merc so there is probably many more good things to be discovered. You generally don’t want to pay more for the same or worse performance. American owed looks like it is going to take this one.

Iam just trying to get some info ,can we see a boat swing a big prop with a Merc v8 250 like the sho can that had a Merc 2 stroke before, not a 24 or 25 ,but a 27-28 .Theres no quality argument here as either can have problems on a bass boat.My statements are 100 truth as what we have seen with the sho in all weather conditions upper 80s to high 50s .The sho is a bad ass motor that has not been out done since it has came out in the 4 stroke world. The prop thing is not that hard for dealers grab a 27 -28 -29 go put it on a ranger or Phoenix or what ever and see if it will even take off than you can play with top end numbers .A Merc 2 stroke 250 has to have at least 2 -3 pitches lower on same boat that has a sho.225 Merc Pro XS is a power house on low end compared to the 250.Theres some starting info .

You are creating strawman arguments. Since the Merc V8 seems to swing a prop more efficiently who cares what pitch it is. It’s the outcome that matters.

Makes ZERO sense. Who cares what pitch prop is being run, the point is to run in the recommended WOT rpm range. Suzuki swings bigger props than yami because of its lower unit ratio, but yet they are slower. Higher pitch means absolutely nothing.

And I have no cares about brands so I’m not defending merc or anyone else.

If anyone really wants to get into a debate about motors, all you have to do is ask “what is Yamaha’s stock motor answer to the 300+ hp motors for boats that really turn fast props”. They have nothing over 250 unflashed that will fit on a tater chip boat.

Grout it has to do with gear ratio the gear ratio is the same on sho and Merc v8 and 2 stroke. The Honda Suzuki are a lot different. If you can turn a bigger prop on lower gear ratio you will go faster. As we have found out the 250 2 stroke wont get out of the hole

All the go faster Champion guys I knew growing up would jack the motor way up, put a hydrofoil on for a hole shot, and run big eared 3 blade choppers. These guys were driving their boats well past speeds they were designed to run at.

My first Charger was setup that way over rated, hydrofoil, and a chopper.

Big choppers were wide open 1 inch hub for the old 150-200 2.0-2.5 mercs. All on 18 ft skinny boats just imagine what a 200 Pro XS does in terms of performance from hole shot to topend. We ran the 195 with new technology and it was amazing the difference from the old days and we should see that gain again with newer technologies.

The V8 Mercury seems to have a low slip ratio at least on the props they were trying. Both were about 5% slip ratio on a stock prop. You don’t even need to work the stock prop with that low of a slip ratio. The prop pitch argument is a strawman’s argument.
