Broke a rod on a cleat?

Me too. And a co-worker hooked his shorts on one climbing out of his boat and broke his shoulder when he hit the ground.
I didn't want to spend the $$ or drill new holes for fold down cleats, so I rednecked it and made 4 sets of these....

Looks like those are held on with bungee cords between the blocks. I think he just removes the ones he's going to tie up on.

Great ideas are not necessarily redneck engineering :)

Got it. Makes a lot of sense, especially if one were to use the boat for flyfishing.

    Well done.

i hate the non retractable type - caught the webbing area between my pointer finger and thumb on one and took 8 stitches, they were promptly removed. After that I just tied off to the trolling motor mount

That sounds bad. Boats are a challenge as it is to keep your balance. An open cleat is always there saying
"Hey big boy, come a little closer "
Your solution is a good one!

A friend of mine was sitting on the edge of his ski boat and slid into the water. As he slid off he caught the cleat on the inside of his thigh resulting in a nasty jagged cut with I don't remember how many stitches. Bad enough that he was on crutches for a week or two.
    Don't worry Ma'am....

Yep, have them on my Champ, they are in shallow recesses along the outer edge of the cap. I really like this idea, but I'm not sure I'd be able to make them fit good since they aren't on a flat surface. But they bother me....just waiting to cause trauma or rod breakage.....

I am not exactly sure of your setup, but...you might consider taking a WalMart cutting board and, using a belt sander, round a concave groove into one long bottom section. Then, laying your cleat on top on the flat side, cut out a piece that would fit between the cleat and the rounded gunnel. Add some 3M5200 and I'll bet it will fit much better.

I hope I am picturing your setup correctly. Sorry if this isn't clear.
