I've found that the easiest way to keep it looking good is to wipe it down with some sort of spray wax after each trip. It's a pain but it sure beats cleaning a season's worth of baked on water spots later. I use the Wax As U Dry product and like it.
There was a time that I didn't fish but I cannot remember it.

clay bar, polish, prep and Gyeon Mohs ceramic coating. After that wipe with Cure every couple months. E1 Wax-as-u-dry in between literally wipes off bugs and water spots with zero scrubbing.

You would be shocked to see what just plain vinegar and water will do to clean a boat and motor. whatever wax you like after it is clean.

I just put it on the trailer and drive it home...same thing I did with my Yamahas and Evinrudes. If it were not for BBC I would never have known that a Mercury required special cleaning procedure(s)...but now that you mention it, that could be the reason that my motors have never been "shinny".

Nu-Finish Spray Foam Detailer after washing with ProTec wash. And I keep a vented Mercury cover on it.
