    1998 Champion 202 Elite prop

I recently purchased my dream boat, in my opinion the Champion 202 is still one of the best boats on the water. My question is the right prop for my setup? My 202 is matched with a carbureted 1997 225 Evinrude Vindicator with a six inch jack plate and a 4 blade OMC Renegade 13 1/2x 25 prop. Does anyone know what the correct prop for my setup is?
    Thanks.

25 tempest with johnrude hub kit.
Start at 4” shaft under pad and let the most tell you what it wants.
Should be an easy 72-74 setup.

Thank you for the info. Can you explain to me what “4 inch shaft under pad” means? I’m pretty wet behind the ears about this stuff.

    Thanks again.

That's the measurement of the distance from the center of the prop shaft to the pad. I think there is a sticky at the top of the Champion forum that explains how to measure it. It's important to measure it correctly.

Yeah, what works on what you've got is great, but if someone is running a different motor, hull, whatever that well meaning advice can be a waste of time.
Different power curve, different gear ratio.

Is there a difference between a Tempest and a Tempest Plus or is it just a marketing thing?

I believe the difference is thicker blades and the pvs holeshot plugs.

PLUS: adjustable PVS vents, replaceable hub kit. Depending on what year it was made will have a little thicker blades.
A45 (original) Tempest, no adjustable vents, Rubber permanent hub. But, it's thinner (faster) blades and will usually be a little quicker than a stock plus.

So any 25 Tempest will do, I just have to have a Evenrude hub kit put in?

Much appreciate all the good info/advice. Now time to try and not spend a small fortune on a new to me prop.
    Happy Father’s Day to all.

    No...
You HAVE to have the plus. That's the one with the replaceable hub. You need the OMC/Bomb hub kit to fit your johnrude.

I finally found a Tempest Plus 25. Prop shaft is at 4 inch below pad, starts out good then starts caving. When down to 4 3/4-5 below pad and still cavs.

    Any suggestions?

Hi Pat thanks for responding, what do the vent holes do? My prop was not sent to me with vent plugs, they are wide open.

It vents exhaust gas to the blades so they can spoil up faster.

Start putting plugs back in till it stops cavitating.

Plugs should be available at any Mercury dealer.

According to the brochures, the 1998 202 was in the Tournament series, not the Elites. Hulls identical, just some features like upgraded electronics were standard on the Elites and options on the Tournaments.

Looks like your right on the money Mr. Pat, thanks for the info.

Lea, I appreciate the info on my 202, wish I could find the book that came with it. I’ve looked but most likely not in the right places. I never knew the difference between the Elite and the Tournament.
