My boat I assume came with a merc...but I have a yammy on it.
My speedo is not working (I use my hummingbird gps for true speed). This speedo is the one with the fuel gauge in it, which works.
Can I get this speedo working again?

I have the same gauge speedo/fuel it's been frozen for years I've tried to clear it out multiple times finally gave up. I also use GPS for speed and the fuel gauge works fine. I've seen plenty of the other gauges for sale the rpm/trim but no speedo/fuel. Thinking about a Merc smart gauge as a replacement.

thing is, I don't think it's hooked up to anything. How does it hook up? My boat was rigged with a Merc originally, but now is a Yamaha.

It's just a small tube that connects to the back of the gauge. There is a very small hole on the leading edge of the lower unit. As you drive down the lake water is forced into the hole and up into a tube that runs to the back of the gauge. The pressure in the tube increases with speed and in turn the gauge needle moves. The Yamahas are notorious for getting trash in the pickup hole and not reading but you could also have a hole in the tube or it could be disconnected at the lower unit. Try clearing the hole in the lower unit with a 1/16 drill bit but ONLY turn the bit by hand DO NOT chuck it up in a drill. It will probably just plug itself up again though.
I checked the hole on the lower, it wasn't dirty....I wonder if my tube is not connected. Oh well, I guess I will live without it! Thanks fellas!

Did you try clearing it with a drill bit? Mine gets lots of wood trash in there every spring. I have to spend about 30 minutes twisting the bit to get it all out but it starts working again after that. The drill bit should go nearly all the way in, if it's clear. I do have a Merc though. Don't know about Yamahas.

Blow compressed air in the hole and listen for leaks and see if the gauge moves.
I will try the drill bit again...I did blow air in it too, started with low pressure and went up to about 70 psi....nothing.

You would hear air leaking if its not connected.
well found the problem! LOL!! The needle is under the pin! I guess at some point the water in the gauge pushed the needle all the way around when it froze in winter....
Anyone have a gauge?!

I have a complete set of gauges for that rig if you want them. I switched over to digital when I repowered with my G2. They been Layng around for a little over a year so not sure they all work. But I could send them to you and we can settle on a price once you evaluate them.
