I would conclude that one of the ethernet ports is bad.

That would indicate something not right with the networking. Could try resetting the IP address to see if that cures the problem. If not, then possibly an internal unit problem as indicated by Tweakjr. Here's a prior post on resetting the IP address (explained in post #12):

Your comment got me thinking about the IP so I went to the menu startup for both units and clearly something is wrong (I assume with software).
Bow UNit - Self Test: Pass S/N is listed and correct but the IP Address is blank ( --------------)
Dash UNit - Self Test Pass S/N is all messed up (shows -1-1-001-) and also a blank IP address...showing ( ---------)
I tried. Still nothing. IP address is blank on both still and the main unit has a messed up S/N.
I called Humminbird and they won't even service the units since they stopped servicing all their 900 model series since they are 5 years old. Unbelievable. I expect after 5 years that the updates stop etc but I can't believe a company won't even service their own product.
What software release? I believe the 998's have been out since 2010.(8 years) I have not kept up with Lowrance but I would bet they service less than half of that. Bob

What software release are they both at? You can still buy new 998 units. I saw one on Amazon today. If you have both your units at 7.670 one must be bad. I am sure you can find a used unit for less than the unit repair would have cost anyway. Bob

Do you know anyone who has a Humminbird unit you can test with? ..... Connect it with each unit one at at time to try to determine if one of them has a bad Ethernet port.
