Came home tonight to no AC. Have a heat pump/AC unit outside, it is running but fans in basement unit are not turning on. Went downstairs and found the refridgerant line from the outside unit to basement unit is frozen solid. It is an old unit, over 20 years old.
As you can probably guess I am clueless on these things. Currently have it turned off but any ideas what it might be? Anything I can do?

Blower motor seized up?
Low on Freon.
If your indoor blower fan is not running that's why its frozen. Could be a fan cap, fan motor, fan relay, or control board.

Make sure your indoor blower is operating, then see if the filter is dirty. Turn outdoor unit off and switch indoor blower to "on" and let the coil thaw out. Then check the refrigerant charge. Good luck, too damn hot for no ac!

Low on refrigerant. Look at em everyday.
Step one, make sure the fan works. Let us know if you want more from the peanut gallery after you check it out.
Also, if u turn frozen unit off. Let it unthaw the line. It will run again
"Unthaw"? Might be better if you just let it thaw.

This, it will freeze them up in no time. Shut it down and make a call.
You might be able to shut the breaker for the AC for a few hours with the fan running and let it thaw. But it will freeze up again rather quickly
Just saw that. Mine was leaking at the valve stem. Hooked the hoses and pumped it high pressure and sprayed everything. Never lost pressure for 1/2 an hour. I was thinking WTH. Took the hose off and,, there we go, simple fix
Yeah just have to wait for part and get back on techs schedule, topped it off so at least it will work until Tuesday when he comes back

Yep, from previous posts I believe he is an a/c tech. I agree with him and I'm an a/c guy as well, for 43 long, long years!
