03, when boats began to be built in Murfreesboro, TN.

Matt, Isn't that Baltek vice Blatek?

Baltek is a manufactured balsa wood used in some high end racing yahts due to its light weight. In how it is in my 203 (was rather) there are no 'layers' of fiberglass cloth. It is one 2" wide piece of Baltek balsa board. Ensure you keep the top dry where the top meets the topcap as it is not wrapped and doesn't do well to water penetration. Good luck.

Another question... how strong would a transom repair be compared to the original?
In a way i guess the question would be answered by whos doing it and what materials are they using.

Never done one myself a co-worker had his repaired by a shop in Tulsa over 10 years ago. He has repowered it twice since then and has had no issues with the repair. Fish with him a few times a year and he is generally rough on a boat.

With the materials they have today, if done right I think they are probably stronger than original. I haven't had a traditional transom replacement but have used the pourable type in 2 different boats and it is solid as a rock.

A new transom is as strong as the builder makes it. Any reputable glass guy should know what they're doing.

    To the unknowing....
The reason for the Baltec (sorry I have to giggle when that word is used) is that balsa doesn't rot. Unless it's been soaked for years, and actually delaminated, a wet transom can be dried out and be good as new.

    What you don't know...
A "composite" transom can delaminate just as quickly. Water intrusion will destroy a fiberglass/foam/structure laminate in the same amount of time. Don't be a marketing lemming and think you're worry free, you're not.

Pat, I dried my transom last winter, it was really wet. Water ran out the ski ladder holes. 2001-190sx. So your saying I should be as good as new? That would be a major relief. I heat lamped 4x the time you recommend inside and outside the transom. Sealed everything with starbrite.

I had a buddy with a lemming wagon that had to be totaled because of water intrusion. I guess it was everywhere, even in the foam. He probably neglected it.
