    Wedges

I currently have a sand wedge. I'm not exactly sure what the degree is. Its really old. I've been reading about wedges and bounce. Should I just buy 3 new wedges. A set? I know there's a sand wedge, gap wedge and a lob wedge. I know the face wears out over time. Any recommendations? Thanks

It really depends on your game and swing as to what wedges you need. I'd suggest you go to a fitter in order to find out what you need for your game.

Thanks. I have done a little research and I understand what the different wedges are. I need to go somewhere and talk with someone who can help before I just buy something. I'm a novice golfer so it would definitely help to go talk with someone.

As a beginner you should probably get a gap wedge of either 50 or 52*. This is due your pitching wedge is probably 44*. This will help "fill the gap" between the pw and sw.
The other wedge should be a sand wedge of 56*. I see no need for a beginner using a 60* wedge as one is not needed at that level.
There are a lot of good wedges out there that shouldn't break the bank.

Scotty Cameron has a fitting guide on website. It will tell you what loft and bounce you want.

I tried 56, 58, 60 and 54. Liked them all at one time but settled on the 56 as the most dependable for all situations. Bounce important too as I settled with 8 bounce.
a lot will depend on conditions you play on your course.
check the used club barrels and get a cheap one of each.
Drive to Tulsa and I can sell a 54,60 and 58

I'd get a 54 or 56 if just buying one, maybe even a 52 degree.

Best bet would be to go out to a range and hit some, and also a chipping green to see how you like them around the green.

My SW is an old knight club. 56* I'm sure it needs replacement. Plus another wedge. I was reading on The Sand Trap (message board) that a 60* is really hard for beginners. I'm not a beginner but I'm sure no expert either. Haaahaa. Maybe a gap wedge. That's usually a 58* wedge.

A 56 degree with about 12 degrees of bounce would be a good all around wedge. The bounce is what keeps it from digging. The less bounce the more it digs, the more bounce the less it digs. A 56 with 12 degree would work in the sand real well and also be good out of the green side rough. If you play really firm, tight fairways, you may want a little less bounce like 8 degree. If you go less than 8 they tend to dig too much in the sand. A local fitter should be able to figure out your gaps and steer you to the right bounce

Great information. This helps explain it better. Thanks

Just got this Cleveland wedge. Pre owned. Golf Galaxy. $50. I am still looking for a replacement for my SW. Didn't wanna spend the $100 for a new one. Trying to save a few bucks and I dont need the newest model.

I typically carry five wedges (P, A, S, L, 64) and will substitute depending on course conditions. Be aware when mixing wedges from different manufacturers and/or years as the loft degree is often not consistent. I believe this results from marketing strategies touting that the average golfer can hit their brand X wedge higher/farther than Brand Y. If you’re not being fitted, also be aware of wedge characteristics: material, length, bounce, etc...

I carry a 52 and 56. The 56 is adjusted to 57. A 60 for a beginner is trouble. Find used wedges to try before spending a ton of money on a set.

I'm not a total beginner. Haaahaa. But I think I'd like to replace my SW next. It's a 56* but have no idea of the bounce.

I’m no pro, but for what it’s worth I only carry one wedge other than my Pitching wedge. I think average players sometimes get carried away with wedges. I have a 54 - 10 vokey that I use for everything and don’t really need anything else until the rare occasion I could use a 60* for a very steep flop shot.

I used to carry only a 54 Mizuno wedge. I hit it around 100 yards and used it for everything. Now I have a 56 and 52 only for distance. I hit the 52 105-110. The 56 90-95 on normal shots. I dont think I was missing much with just the 54 in my bag.

Ordered this club. It was normally priced for $129.99 then on sale at most stores for $99.99 and it was $79.99 and free shipping. I think it is a good deal.
