    Rod straps

For the guys that have added rod straps to your XB21 where did you put them on the front deck? I'm wanting to use the same kind I installed in my last Bullet but the only place they will work is right under the tie down cleats. That's the only place on the front gunnels that you have access to the back but I'm afraid they will be to far back. Here's a the ones I used on the bullet. I used the conceal kits with them so I didn't have to cut the big hole and they make a much cleaner install. I've used about every kind of strap out there and these are by far my favorite.

Matt, those rod buckles are the best tie downs I've ever used and I've tried them all over the years. I installed them in both Allisons but was not able to use the conceal kit like you have shown. There just isn't enough room under the gunnel in an Allison to do so. And the gunnels in our boats are foam filled which makes it even more difficult.

I ended up cutting the big hole for the buckle assembly to be inserted after removing enough foam to set in place. Mine are seated right by the end of the hinge of the compartment lid so that when they are pulled out the fastener is on the compartment lid at the far corner. That way when I lift the lid the rods stay with it rather than the rods being pushed overboard.

I haven't been able to get pics up since photobucket. I could email you pics of mine if interested.

The previous owner of my boat surface mounted mine. I was able to remove one because it had been drilled down into the deck, the other one is still surface mounted on the Stbd side but I have no other choice but to cut it in when I get time because he drilled it into the gunnel.

That looks great!! I think those should be an option from the factory.

    Matt,
That is awesome. Where can I buy those and what made the cleat area easier to get access too? Access from underneath, through the side box?

Under the cleat is the only place you have access behind the gunnel. The rest of it is full of foam. I bought these at tackle warehouse.

Thanks. I will check mine out and see if I can work up the nerve to cut on the fiberglass.

Looking at Tackle Warehouse it appears I would need to buy the conceal kit and the traditional gunwale deck mount. Is that right? Then break off the huge face plate on the gunwale piece and run through the low profile conceal plate?

Yes you will need the conceal kit but you don’t have to break anything off. The wide piece sits behind the gunnel

Wow. Surprised all that fits behind the gunnel through the cleat area.
