How does locking through work exactly? Is there a number you can call for a heads up or do you just have to roll the dice and show up? With barge traffic you would have to make sure you beat them there

Years ago at the Robert Bird locks on the small chamber, we used to pull a chain they had hanging down and they’d open the gate. Not sure how the it works now or at others.

I gotcha. If you didn’t have any way of knowing how close a barge was it would be a real crap shoot in a tournment

No pull chains at Winfield or Marmet. You have to call. Its not just a matter of outrunning the barge to the chamber. If they are close enough then they have priority. I have had to wait up to an hour to lock in a tournament before

if you happen to have a VHF/FM marine radio the lock operators monitor CH-16. Its not worth buying one just for this use but some people own them for one reason or another. There are several hand held units around $ 125.00 - 150.00 range.
