Lake Altus

Anyone here fish Altus? I have family in Mangum and am visiting this weekend. I’m not bringing my boat or anything but I was just curious if anyone here fished there.

I've never fished there but it used to be known for either striper or hybrid fishing. It almost dried completely up a few years back but rains in recent years has brought it back up. I saw a piece on Outdoor Oklahoma show where it's being re-stocked and ready for fishing. There's probably a lot of shore line cover that grew in while it was down so low, that's flooded now.

Watch out for rattlesnakes. That area is thick with them.

It was also shut down few years back due to the blue green algae killing off some fish.

I went there for my girlfriends 16th birthday well before the lake drained down....a lot of years ago. Anyway, I took a rod and a couple baits and fished from the shore near the lodge. Caught a couple largemouth in the mornings on a trap. I have no clue what it’s like after the water fluctuation and algae bloom kill. Never hurts to try though gltu
