    Bilge cleaner

Best products/solution? Any household products do the trick like Simple Green?

If it's grease or oil, Simple Green will do it. I actually thought mine had a bunch of grease or oil buildup in it and was shocked to see most of it rinse away rather easily with just a garden hose. Some kind of grime buildup you get I guess from dust mixing with water then re-drying over time.

I've heard of people dropping a bar of soap down there - I think Lava is widely suggested though that might not be right given that I think it's got pumice in it. I never did it as I worried about it getting stuck in something like a livewell valve cable or making my drain plug not seal, and don't particularly care that much if my bilge is clean anyhow.

Also, in before all the people telling you you're crazy for caring if your bilge is clean!

    Put plug in
    Add water and simple green.

Drive around stop and go for 10-15min.

Scrub out with brush and or rags.

    Run bilge pumps.

    Drain, rinse, let dry.

I do the same thing but with Dawn instead of Simple Green.

Spray everything with Purple Power then rinse with the hose on a fine stream. You can use a brush for crevasses. After that, I put the plug in and add a bunch of water and more Purple Power (or Dawn) and go for a drive. Drain everything out.

The area around the battery trays I clean with baking soda so it will neutralize any battery acid residue that is present. You may not see battery acid residue but I assure you if you have wet cell batteries you have residue in your bilge area. During the charging process the battery heats up and vents gas. There is residue from the gas escaping the battery that has settled in your trays and bilge area. The rest of bilge I clean with Dawn. I also wanted to add do not clean the bilge on your driveway unless you want a nasty stain. If you do it on the grass it may kill a small spot but it will grow back.

Dawn works good. If you can fill the bilge and let it soak for a little bit it will really clean it up

After you clean the bilge cut a bar of Lava soap in half and drop one half in the lowest part of the bilge. Keeps it clean without any extra work.

Put some Dawn in before you go fishin once a month and your bilge will stay clean. Don’t use the bar of soap trick...it could get caught under your float switch and burn up the pump.
