Aldebaran BFS - feeling gears when reeling

I have a 16 Aldebaran BFS and did a hook set on saturday and as soon as I started reeling again I could "feel gears" as I turn the handle. No feel or sound when casting. When I remove the spool I can feel/hear (just a whine sound when reeling) it slightly (seems to be in the worm gear). If I cast and retrieve then as I place more tension on the line it is more pronounced. I can not hear it when the spool is in but can feel it.
Have not replaced a worm gear on a reel before but looking for advice on how to isolate the issue to make sure that is what it is before tearing it down.

    THANK YOU
Where are the BIG ones? When are we going?

The newer Shimanos tend to have the pinion bearing be a crap part out the box. I have replaced countless pinion bearings in newer Shimanos. Every one that I do a service gets a new one, needed or not.

    Main gear and pinion...not bearings.

Most likely it is the gear set. There are other possibilities, however they are not as likely.

Not the same reel, but I've found that removing the anti-reverse pawl in Curados cures this almost "grinding" sound when reeling in addition to smoothing out the reel substantially across the board. In that case I've read that it's basically just turning a Curado into a JDM Scorpion, though that may not be right.

Might be worth doing just to see! Probably should replace the roller bearing in the process to make sure your anti-reverse is good without the backup in there.

Diagnosing over the internet is almost impossible in these situations. That said, I'd be happy to look at it or walk you thru over the phone a couple of tests, but it is either gears or anti reverse clutch imho. Dan
