36v MG Tour new motor control issues

I installed a new lower motor assembly and I’m having problems with my foot controls. When I hit the power, the prop spins backwards momentarily, then spins forwards. The dial is way off and when dialed to medium speed I am getting no power. At the highest speed I think the prop is spinning backwards. I have checked the wiring multiple times and see no problems. I’m thinking it’s either something in the foot pedal or something inside the new motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Sounds like the motor you have is for a hand operated trolling motor. They work off of the resistance from the potientiameter changing the relays on the brush card. Off is apx 2.5K, anything under the motor goes one direction, and over the motor goes the other direction. The pot is a 5k pot, means it goes from 0 to 5K as you turn the knob from off to wide open.

Thanks, that makes sense. I called MotorGuide and verified that it is the correct motor, but I’m relying on the serial number that I pulled off the box because I cannot find any markings on the motor itself. Is there anyway to make this work? Could I swap the circuit boards?

You would have to swap the brush card with one for a foot operated motor. What serial number do you have and where is it located? Also, can you give the lower unit part number?

9B657900 is the serial off of head on the old unit, new motor has part number 897345T79. I’m currently filing a claim with boats.net and hoping they send me a brush card or a new motor.

That part number "backwards crosses" to the 109 Freshwater Tour Digital motor. Without opening, can't say for sure it has the wrong brushholder, but it has the symptons.

The warranty guy at boats.net is wanting the serial off of the original lower unit and I’ve never seen any number on it. Where are the numbers located?

If there is anything on it, it will be a sticker on the back (under the prop). My guess is that number is long gone. As I said, the part number that they shipped is the right part number, however, they don't know if that is the part number of the unit that is in the box (could be mis boxed at Atwood/Motorguide)

I totally agree with John. The way it is acting it has a hand control brush card in it. sounds like the wrong motor was sent or it was boxed wrong.

The sticker was still under the prop and I was happy to send it in and get the ball rolling on the warranty, but the guy is saying it’s the wrong serial number. I guess it starts with a MX. There are 5 different heads that match this unit. It’s ridiculous that MotorGuide can’t get an exact match for my unit by just pulling the serial off the head.

The correct serial was on the brush card and didn’t match any numbers they carry in stock. They said it was discontinued and the one I have is the right one. Doesn’t make sense to me. Pretty bad customer service from boats.net.

Can you post a picture of the brush card and the armature.
    Thanks

I’m having trouble uploading the images to the forum. I hosted them on another site and they’re still not showing up. Here are the links to the hosted photos, hopefully you can copy and paste them otherwise I’ll have to email the photos to you. Thanks

That brushholder looks like the standard (not the hand operated) since I don't see the relays made onto the brushholder. I wasn't looking for part numbers, I was looking at the brush holder (I know the part numbers). Can you get a picture of the top of the brush holder. Also, can you measure the OD of the commutator of the armature (copper bars)

That’s the brush from the original unit, sorry I was confused. I’ll have to post some more pics tomorrow, I don’t think I’ll be able to get to the boat tonight. I’ve been slightly paranoid about opening the new motor up, but it needs to be done and get fixed.
