    Chatterbaits from poison tails

I've been making chatter baits with poison tail jig heads. I'm using a dbl split ring because of the hook eye. They do work and I've caught fish on them. Watching a couple you tubes and the dbl split ring seems to not be the way to go compared to opening up the hook eye, attaching the blade, and squeezing the eye shut. Am I missing something? Any experience with either method? Thanks !

The blade starts moving almost immediately when the blade is attached to the eye

I’ve never used 2 split rings but I’ve made them with a flat eye hook and 1 split ring and they work great and I’ve made them with a figure 8 link attached to the hook and the blade and they work great also. I would think that 2 split rings would put the blade to far from the head to do much chattering.

I made a few with my Poison tail molds but opening the eye was a pain so I quit and went of one of my molds that takes a flat eye hook.

I made some with a Arky mold with a split ring. Works pretty good for me.

I'm making some magnum bladed jigs with the 1/2, 3/4, 1oz Poison tail mold. 7/0 hook to allow the big blade to fold down.

Hey 21XDC, are you using split rings or opening up hook eye?

Opening the hook eye... Not a fan of using a split ring or two.

To show you the size comparison... 1st pic... Regular size blade on a 1/2oz and 4/0 hook... next to a magnum 3/4oz and 7/0 hook...

And same regular bladed jig to 3/4 and 1oz and 7/0 hook...

I use a 5.1:1 Lews for these. I'm not happy with how they swim. Have caught fish with these, But I'm really wanting a blade size in between.

I have made some 1ounce ones using the large blades also haven’t tried any just curios what it is about the action that you don’t like? Also do you fish most your blades straight or put a slight bend in them I have always put a slight bend in mine have never fished a straight one didn’t know how much difference it made in it wanting to ride to high.

They just don't swim like my other coffin shape bladed jigs. They thump hard, But turn over and act weird at higher speeds. I don't bend any of my blades and they swim great and hunt. They don't come to the surface either. The snap holes differ in location and this is what makes them come to the surface or not.

My thought was to use them in deep water in place of slow rolling a big spinner bait.

So....how are you guys closing the hook eyes after adding the blade? Best I can do is to solder the gap closed, else there's a small gap that's somehow big enough to have me losing a fish if not casting the bait off the blade first. Maybe my gorilla hands need some work...

I don't have experience making these. I am getting ready to pour some swim jigs. In conversation with a friend when deciding on a hook for my swim jig mold the friend mentioned that the Eagle Claw hook had a slightly larger opening to accept the blade on a vibrating jig. I ordered them in case I want to try to make a few of those.

These 30* Eagle Claw hooks are my preferred choice on 99% of my bladed jigs. 3/0-4/0 and 5/0
