    Bed fishing smallmouths

How long does it normally take for the female to come up after the male is locked on the bed? We have been on a river in northern Wisconsin and caught almost nothing the first 2 days but saw smallmouth that were too spooky to catch, then the water temp finally got them to lock on. We have had a blast catching the males every few minutes but we are curious how long it will take for the females to move up. The smallmouth up here act a lot different than southern fish. Thanks for any help.

my experience is they are likely sitting on the first break...things happen fast up here...in a matter of hours a female will move up, deposit eggs and poof she vanishes. Try targeting the first breakline structure outside of the areas with males bedding.

I always thought that when the males are locked, the females have come and gone a while ago. The male stays on to protect the eggs. I do know females will sometimes only be up for a matter of hours as was said.
