Starting Battery Strategy - Power Poles, Finders, Livewells ?

    Hello everyone,

Running a Phoenix 721 with 2 power poles and I got stranded on the water. Battery would not start the engine (250 Mercury Optimax) I checked the cells after the fact and they were very low on water--maybe the problem--replacing battery, same as before Interstate 27M-XHD, 800 CCA, 1000MCA. Guess that this battery cooks down the distilled water quickly?

Just don't understand if the battery wasn't properly maintained and that's where the problem came from? Or if I used my power poles more without running the engine for the alternator to re-charge it? Or maybe I left the key in the center position, ready to start but not off (far left). Could that have done it?

Thoughts, don't want problems on the water again!!

Should I buy a Weego product?

    Appreciate it.

Forget the Interstate 27M and get the Duracell AGM 31 at Sam's Club.

This ^^^^^. Also, I purchased a Beatit BT-D11 portable booster pack from Amazon and it is awesome. Can jump start an engine dozens of times on a single charge. Can charge your phone, etc as well. Worth the $ to never be stranded again. I am sure there are many brands out there that do the same. I went with this one based on the reviews. Been great so far.

Depending on where Fairfax is, it could be environment related. Water loss can be exacerbated by high temperature, high voltage at charge or AC current leak through of a DC charger output.
Most modern high performance batteries are sealed. Let the pummeling begin.
I use the Duracell AGM 31 from Sam's, but strictly for the cost/value relationship.

The 27 is to small. That's what they put in mine and it didn't last a year. Get a 31 like the Duracell and you will be alright

I have same interstate battery I picked up last season. I only have a 150 Pro xs but I noticed in the cooler month I get the low voltage beep when starting and my front bird shuts off. I will need a new battery here shortly as well. It's hurts tho to drop $400 (cnd dollars, every costs more here) for a battery but it is what it is.

I would not buy a battery with only 800 CCA with a pro xs.

I run wallmart everstart 29 max for all 4, 3 trolling and the 1 cranking. The reason why is I ran the high cost 31 series amg's and they still never made it over 2 years with very, very heavy use. So I switched to the wallmart everstart 29 max with the 2year non pro rated replacement, key words non pro rated. 1st sign of even the slightest dip in not holding charge I bring it back and no questions asked they give you a new battery. I guess what i'm saying is a fresh 29 beats anything a 31 will do after 1 year. Basically I always have fresh power in my boat, by the way that 29 will run my NMEA bus, two graphs, two livewells in constant on position, 2 10 foot blades all day and still fire the outboard at the end of the day.

No matter how big or small, if it is not maintenance free, you need to pull the caps at least once and month and check the water level. Need to have distilled water available at all times. In the old days, lead acid batteries got the water level check every time you filled up with gas.

Get the Odyssey 2150. It comes with a 4yr full replacement warranty., not some pro rated crap. Cost is around 350.00 online with free shipping.

Just make sure your battery charger will properly maintain AGM 's.
Odyssey requires a special charger, check their website for Approved Chargers.
Where batteries are concerned, The Bigger, The better.
Better to have and not need, THAN need and not have.
