I have a hummingbird 997, I think I got sold a lemon. I bought it used off of here and its got quite a bit of hourson it, when its on for a few minutes the screen will either freeze or go into a grayish/white then to blank....
Seems to me this unit Is most likely shot, just seeing if theres anything to try before I get something different.
Verify you have it connected to a fully charged battery with a dedicated electrical circuit.

Was having the same type of issue, here’s what I found and it help me
Under HB units operating systems are Linux or a Unix-variant.
The NAV directory partition is formated(which requires the following sysboot). And it is under the Setup Menu so it can be performed when corrupted NAV data would cause a unit crash when you access the Navigation Menu.
It is a safety net for Waypoint Management System.
