    Hambys?

Quick question.... I’m looking to put a Hambys on my boat. Just wondering what a fair price would be?

$650 seems to be the going rate for an installed unit

The self install is not that expensive but the quality is about like all the other brand of self install keel guards. The heavy duty model has to be installed by an authorized dealer. The quality of the heavy duty model is in a league of it's own. Hamby's is the only one that makes a heavy duty keel guard. It's been 19 years since I had my heavy duty keel guard installed and I can't recall the price but it was quite a bit more than a self install unit. With that being said it's still holding up good 19 years later...I know you were wanting price but sorry I can't recall the price. I just wanted to point out that you need to be specific when asking for price because there is a big difference in the regular keel guard and the heavy duty keel guard.

Thanks guys... definitely know I want the dealer installed version. Just talked to a buddy who got his installed for under $500. Sounds like a very fair price to me. Believe I’ll be making a call tomorrow.

My install was $200 ( Truman Fiberglass) that was 1999. Hamby was free. I saw my old boat a few years ago, the Hamby still looks like the day it was installed.

    $500-$600 today wouldn't be a bad price

The heavy duty model will say Hamby's Original Beaching Bumper on it and the self install will say Hamby's Light. The Original heavy duty model is 5/8" thick and is put on with an epoxy adhesive that bonds it to the fiberglass. The Light Duty model is 5/16" thick and is applied with 3M adhesive. On the heavy duty model once its cured it's pretty much there for the rest of the life of the hull. I saw a post in the restoration forum one time where they were going to have the hull of their boat totally resurfaced. The hardest part of the prep was removing the heavy duty Hamby's because it was bonded to the hull. There is a couple of reasons why it is dealer installed. One is so a trained person can ensure the epoxy used is applied correct. Another is it is twice the thickness as the light duty so it's a little harder to work into place so a trained person is used to make sure everything is correct.

The Hamby's Light goes on just like all the other manufacturers that sell light duty keel guards. They attach with 3M adhesive. I helped a friend install a Keelshield and it had the 3M adhesive. You have sticky 3M adhesive that is on the keelguard. You get the keelguard in place and ensure where you want it. Then you remove the tape and the keel guard sticks to the hull. I would describe the heavy duty model as being bonded to the hull and the light duty as being stuck to the hull if that makes any sense but to answer your question you tell the difference by the name...heavy duty says original and light duty says light duty.

    That's more than fair.

Had mine done for ~$450 in '07... Best money I've spent on the boat.

My hambys was 350 installed in 2000 still looks like new. If I could afford a new boat wouldn't hesitate to drop 6 bills on the original. But I plan on keeping my 97 for a long long time.

Probably reasonablly close to you. It’s L and L Marine in Northport AL, the West side of Tuscaloosa. It was certainly worth the drive for me. They did a lot of work on a buddies boat and they treated him right. So I went there based on his great review. Have been very pleased so far.
