Recommendations on what to be sure and ask your dealer before you leave with new boat

Picking up a new skeeter and got to thinking of everything I need to ask BEFORE I leave. Breakin directions have been suggested as an issue for the Yamaha.
i am sure you folks have some ideas on that. 20 years since my last boat so I would appreciate any suggestions.

    Break in
go over boat open all boxes make sure they latch proper
startup all units etc to make sure all works
ask if a special key is needed for wheels
ask for explaination if warranty on boat and motor
look over boat completely for any damage
ask for help using anything you may be unfamiliar with

#1 Thing with that Sho is the breakin process.
    Fuel treatment
    Oil Type
Push Every Button to make sure everything works. Including livewells.
Ask this on the Skeeter Forum, they'll know exactly what to look for.

I won't name the dealer but I purchased their demo boat and put new everything on it. Was told it was mint and even have the text from rep stating so. Unfortunately found out a couple years later it was not. I'd say as long as its brand new and you know so you are good in that regard. But make sure to get all the paperwork for all the equipment on boat. Go around boat and check gel coat for sure. See if all electronics work. Wonder if you could go for a ride first with dealer rep?

Just make sure everything works, no janky latches, or loose screws on lid openers.

Based upon my personal experience 7 years ago, I should have asked all of the following because none of it was done.

    1. Have you put in the batteries?
    2. Have you put the registration number on my boat?
    3. Where is the boat cover?
    4. Where is the motor cover?
    5. Where is the draw string bag that the covers go into?
    6. Why do the trailer tires look under inflated?
    7. Why doesn't one trailer light work?
    8. Do I have time to go get breakfast while you get this stuff done??

From my recent experience with my new 2018 Skeeter.

    1. Check for any damage or blemish
    2. Check the correct batteries were installed and all wires are connected.
    3. Check that all switches work
    4. Check that livewells work
    5. Check that graphs work
    6. Check for loose seats (one of my was loose)
    7. Check that your light pole fits in rod locker correct (mine didn't)
    8. Check that trailer lights work while hitched to your truck
    9. Check that your hot foot fits the way you want
    10. Check trolling motor if it works
    11. break in procedure (you can also find online)
    12. Did they use non synthetic oil for break in and also have dealer show you the current level
    13. How to check oil
    14. How to use live wells if not familiar
    15. Trailer tire inflated level (should be 65lbs)
    16. Check all latches work for lids and ensure you have both keys to the locks
    17. Check that all hoses in the bilge are connected (one of mine wasn't) and the boat leaked a lot of water the first time I launched.
    18. Check that the bulb for the fuel line is not still connected from the factory straight across. If so they need to change it (it's a Yamaha bulletin on this)
    19. Make sure the power pole(s) are working, you know how to use the phone app
20 And more important. Get under the boat and make sure all the bunks are tight against the boat or better yet measure the supports. My trailer and more were built out of specs and I had to get a new trailer!

    Hope this helps

I've seen 3 different dealers not install the prop correctly, by not using the correct thrust washers, on the SHO. Ensure that prop is installed correctly.

My boat came with the prop installed at the factory. I would think that is the case unless you order special prop or not one at all. But another good thing to add to the list. I also meant to add to my list to make sure you get all the paperwork for warranty and registration.

My first question would be why didn't your dealer talk you Out of buying a skeeter.

And you can tell Damon I said that.

yes, check the prop, make sure it's the one you paid for. We had a local dealer around here that was taking off the merc props and replacing them with brand x

Did you put oil in it?
Had a friend who picked up a new boat, was going to take it about 45 minutes (on the water) to his dock. Made it about 20 minutes (which I thought was pretty good) and the engine blew. Called the marina and they came and towed him and his wife back in (wow was she pissed) and they realized there was not oil in the engine. Who would have thought you needed to ask

Wow! Great help except Gambler I would assume many of those things should be on the dealer’s checklist.
thanks for the suggestions and glad I asked. And I will make that list.

when you hook up to your truck, make sure that you try to BACK UP. When I bought mine, Drove all the way home and it wouldn't go in reverse. Ended up being the plug from the trailer to truck was bad and had to be replaced.

Also, make sure they included a FIRE Extinguisher.

Check to make sure the trolling motor inline breaker is rated to match the upgraded trolling motor you chose.

As noted, have your list. Take a knowledgeable buddy that doesn't have interest in a new boat and let him go thru it. They are not "under the influence" and will find stuff you will not see. Or you can wait till you get it home or at the ramp and they will find it then......

All in all there are no stupid questions cause if you don’t ask now it may lead to a lot of future frustration. Also if you have the time drop it in a nearby lake and maybe run it for a hour just to verify things are working. I really wish I did that cause I would of saved myself a lot of motor frustrations and one bad transducer location.

And absolutely dont forget dont settle it’s a new boat get what you want.
