Johnson faststrike 150 runs hot and oily plugs. Tachometer not working.

Well my motor on my Ranger 481vs ņis acting crazy. 1994 johnson 150 fast strike. Can't get on plane. Not going past 2500-3000. Hopefully it's not blown. Plugs are oily. (Carburatorated). I even ran it at home with no thermostats and still was running warm. Any ideas? Always happens at wrong time. I can't never get ahead.

Compression test first. Then ignition checking spark on all 6, when was the last time the water pump has been replaced.

Spot on Champ. Waiting for my bro to bring the compression tester and also doing leak down as well as spark test. What is the process for power pack test? I have SELOC book. Say it's some adapter thing you use with voltmeter.

Cool thanks Champ. Hey also the only way to do timing is that Johnson analyzer tool right? No timing light.

Correct, but you can use the timing light to check the power pack for double firing by using the timing light.

I really think I do since it hadn’t been checked since a rebuild several years ago.

Update. Compression numbers 110, other 5 are 105. Found out motor was overheating from a faulty housing that had impeller spinning around. Primary and secondary Coils are good. Problem is no charge at all from idle or slight bump from hose muffs. so i think it's 3 things

    Stator
    power Pack
    Reg/Rectifier

Yeah she cools great now. But Im definitely gonna need a reg/rectifier. Tachometer doesn’t work which I think is why the reg/react needs replacing. I’m hoping it’s not stator. Is there an easy way to test without pulling flywheel off Champ?

If your still running the VRO, if the VRO tach circuit fails it will cause the tach not to work.

No need to pull the flywheel, the V/R sits on top of the block just ahead of the power pack. Remove the rectangular plastic cover between the flywheel cover and the power pack 4 4 Phillips head screws and lift it off, look for the plug with two yellow wires on it. Order a new gasket for it too.

Just blow into each cylinder, if your motor can take that kind of hot air pressure it's OK.

    Wow..lol
Hey Championman, I hate to get this and it could also be a bad stator. I'm guessing that is possible too. Man that means work and more dough. Oh well.
