on mine I added a few 2 inch holes in the sides and front of the box so the inside will breath and dry easier. carpet all you can see and forget the rest...

Why not leave one side open on your step? The open side will face out and you have storage under step.

I would use non skid rubber on top, at least that is what I did.

Any pics of step box? I have a bit of trouble stepping from floor to deck on my Skeeter.

You're probably going to laugh, but I use one of these. Handy as hell, cheap, and stores easy. https://www.walmart.com/ip/Stout-Stuff-Folding-Step-Stool-Assorted-Colors/47089037?wmlspartner=wlpa&adid=2222222222703718554 7&wl0=&wl1=g&wl2=c&wl3=84536536112&wl4=pla-165560852432&wl5=2840&wl6=&wl7=&wl8=&wl9=pla&wl10= 8175035&wl11=online&wl12=47089037&wl13=&veh=sem

Nothing wrong with the stool. Some tournaments might have a problem if you are using it on the front deck to locate fish.
