What's the purpose of the little door on the back of a reefer trailer, and why are they sometimes open while in transit ?

Ranting incoherently
They have one in front also, open them to let air go through the trailer and let gasses out. A lot of vegetables ripen on the trailer on the way to market.
Always figured it was for air circulation. I used to work around these a lot. Especially with older ones, when the trailers are full, the stuff closest to the reefer can freeze and the stuff in the back can get too warm.

Yep, air circulation. Take a load of something like potatoes or onions, no need to run the reefer, but they need air circulation.
