250 SS Oil Leak and whining while turning

250SS starting whining today only when turning. Kinda strange. 🤔. Also, I smelled what I thought was gear lube. However, upon visual inspection of lower unit I did not see anything. I pulled the cover on the motor and found oil on top of the plastic cover by where the line for the PCV Valve is. Bad PCV cause whining in turns and oil leak? I do I have something else going on here all together. Either way it’s goingto mechanic this week.

I w wouldn’t worry too much. Everything I’ve read and head says that these motors are bulletproof. I’m sure mine will be a great motor over the long run. I will update this post when I get the results back.

A pcv valve could cause oil to be in the compartment... Could have caused a gasket to fail if it was bad because pressure could build. Hard to diagnose without seeing it, but doesn't sound like a blown engine. The squeal while turning... Not sure on that.

Hopefully just a bad valve and not a failed gasket.

The whining while turning would concern me. Is it just when you turn a certain direction? Hydraulic steering or cable steer?

Not sure if it’s just one direction or both. Steering is hydraulic.

Noticed the noise while turning both directions.

That is weird... please report back when the dealer identifies the problem.

Talked to dealer today. I am supposed to drain oil out of it until it gets below the full line and run it. Recheck of oil level after short run. I’m still trying to figure out how I could’ve overfilled it with Ecstar Oil. I’m pretty careful about this that stuff.

Possibly the PCV Valve lifting from having too much oil in it.

Hmmm... that seems odd to me that it would cause a noise while turning.

PCV valves make distinct whining noise when the pop. I believe that is what I hear. I guess I’ll find out.

Drained some oil and got level back to center of hatches on dip stick. All issues resolved. So now the question is, is it making oil or did I overfill the thing.

You could've accidently overfilled it by not getting all of the old oil out during your last oil change. The only way to know if you are making oil is to watch it and try to avoid idling a lot. My dealer told me to avoid long idle times, especially during the break in period.
