    Understanding what your seeing

I’m guessing this might be against the rules but just figured it would be very very helpful to newer people.
Down below post a picture of anything from your unit and label what it is exp (road bed) that way everyone cansorta learn or get a idea of what they are seeing. Even if it’s just a pic of soft bottom going to rocky bottom I think it would be helpful. Sorry if this is against the rules please delete if so.

posted this on previous thread but didn't get a response.
going from planing speed to slow idle this is the sonar image.
i was looking for hard bottom oyster shells, thought the thick bright yellow bottom was hard bottom.
but as soon as i slowed down, the image shows a much thinner high yellow return.
is this normal,or maybe my palette settings are wrong.
why does image go from thick to thin bottom?
    thanks

    9 Carbon S3D

Hard bottom on right, weed bed on left.

Covered boat houses, shore line on right. Rock point on right extending out about 150-200ft with scattered timber.

Coming up on a bridge over pass. Road left and right.
Mostly rock on entrance, looks to be lay downs on exit with scattered fish.

Seems like SS does a better job at 3D than 3D does.

What are you interpreting as scattered fish? In the 3D shot what is the difference between the turbulence and fish?

I have only been out with my SS3D a few times and haven't been able to see an advantage of the 3D. I'll keep at it and try to learn what I am seeing. I had hoped to use it to find dangerous rocks just below the surface off to the side before they found me but haven't figured that out yet. I actually pulled up beside one that is a couple of inches below the water with an immediate drop to 10 feet and wouldn't have known what I was looking at if I didn't know it was there.

Zelmo, I'm interpreting fish from the SS. My opinion of Lowrance 3D is slightly better than useless.

The white dots opposite each other in the water column can/could be the same fish.

Man, I'd love to see those same images on a "non 3D" transducer for comparison!

John, here are some pics of the LSS1, HDS carbon, HST/WSBL. The Fish Reveal with the Down scan from the LSS1 is impressive, but the side scan not so much. I'll take some of the blame on the SS, as I was not setting the sensitivity and adjusting pallets.

I have removed the LSS1 in favor of the SS3D. I'll see how it goes and give the SS3D a chance. Maybe learn a few things...….If you notice on the LSS1 SS I am only going out about 3 or 4 times the depth as recommended, or the norm with the LSS transducers. With the SS3D I am going 6,7, 8 or more times the depth, pretty impressive.

Carbon 9, S3D. 8 to 12 times depth. 3 different color pallets of same structure.

    Pallet 9

    Pallet 6

    Pallet 1

Boat docks on right with rock base. Note how the base deflects boat wakes and wave action to form sand ridges on either side of docks. Also shows a nice rock pile on left across from the dock....deserves some attention!

Looking at the down scan and 2D returns the arches are less than full arches. I think my HST/WSBL needs to be leveled. I leveled the S3D, but passed on leveling the 2D. Maybe get to it today.

Great shots and I think they highlight the purpose of 3D pretty well. For me 3D provides a visual understanding of the bottom contour. Without it, it is very difficult to understand the contour with just the SS. Not applicable in most situations but if you are looking for the a drop off and want to know how it relates to other structure, it is very useful.

Those side scan images have me wanting to upgrade to a carbon. Extremly impressive. I would love to see more 2D down scan images with the carbon though.

Ed, I would like to see your 3DSS images with your SI set at 40' each side.If possible, I want to see what the images look like compared to the images at 140'..
I am having clarity problems with the side set at 40'
Thanks, are you ready for another Gen3?

Donnie, next time out I will get some at 40'. What depth?

I really like this 2D, DI, and SS images. They are a force in favor of SideScan. Just looking at the DI and 2D you would think you are on barren land, BUT, SideScan tells a different story.

Donnie, have some SS at 17-25' depth, set @ 40'.... I'm not positive, but have a few ideas. Let me know if it looks the same as what you are getting. This lake has more of a sand bottom. Next time out I'll try for more of a rock bottom.

One other thing. I'm seeing the down imaging pick up some returns from the left side scan image???
