Don't have to over think this one. Any quality "high" speed reel with 50 or 60 pound braid will do the trick. Choose the reel brand of your choice that balances with your rod and fits your hand the best. I have used Curado E7's and a Revo rocket in the past. Current frog reel is a Curado K, 8.5:1.

Curado 200xg k series will bomb cast a spro and has a great drag system. Also a tatula ct in the 8.1 or the metanium xg. For 200 dollars, I prefer the k series Curado.

The TD-Z Type R+ spool doesn't fit the OG Zillion frame properly. There is a gap between the spool lip and the frame unless you have custom built spacers which most folks don't...

I’m aware the OG zillion uses a 36mm spool amd the tdz is 34mm..... There is a gentlemen here that machines a perfect snap in spacer for each side of which I have 4 pairs.

I'm aware that you're aware of the need for spacers Most folks would not be aware of that fact unless they are tinkerers around with Daiwa reels!

I've been thinking about this as well... building a dedicated Frog Rod using probably either a Dobyns 735C or 736C - that might also throw some larger hollow body swimbaits... usually look for Zillion Type R's for this type of application, but they are getting hard to find, esp in LH. I have an SV103 7.9 I can use, but am also looking at faster - ie the Japan Zillion SV XXHL which is 9.1-ish... Faster is better for Frogs, right :).

Pick your favorite brand with 7:1 or 8:1 reel with deep spool, lots of torque, and light weight. High speed helps you reel it in quickly and get to the next blow up. Deep spool is important so you can put plenty of braid on and make a 200 yard cast. Torque is needed so you can fight the good fight. Weight lets you throw it all day. My personal favorite is a Revo Gen3 Winch with 7:1 gears, but you got to switch the gears out yourself to make it.

I gues that is one drawback of the Zillion SV, less line cap - 14/90 I think. But don't think I'll need 200 either :). Tat SV is 16/90, Tat CT is 16/100, and my SV103 is 16/90 (Odd that SV103 holds more line than Zillion SV though... Original Tat which I don't really care for does 16/100 and OG Zillion/ZTR 16/100 as well. So SV spool appears to give up 10 maybe 15 yards or so depending on model.

Really down to my SV103 or get a JDM Zillion SV 9.1... 33 vs 38 IPT - may not be worth it, might just stick with the SV103 unless a Lefty Type R comes around ;).

They aren't the same spool. Zillion SV spool is a much, much better spool than theSV103 SV spool.

I've heard good things about the Zillion TW 1016 G1 spool for sure.

I knew what you meant, I just mistyped. The Zillion G1 is a much better spool than the SV103. Namely distance.

NO - the Tatula SV does not use the same spool as any other current SV model reel. The Zillion TW 1016 G1 spool is fantastic, we have more on order at The Tackle Trap but have no idea when they'll be back in stock!

yeah that is a dilemma... wait for G1, order a ZillionTW JDM to get 9:1, or try the Tat SV 8:1 on special
