    Anchor or not?

I'll start by saying I do (will) have spot lock, so this isn't really a fishing question.

How many of you carry an anchor for safety purposes, occasional kids swimming, or for other reasons?

I went out fishing one day that was pretty windy. I was fishing down a riprap bank. All of a sudden my trolling motor stops working. Tried to a couple minutes to fix it with no success, and I thought well this was a wasted trip pulled the trolling motor up to head home. Go to crank the big motor and it wouldn't start. Now this was all newer well maintained equipment that had never had problems before. I had no anchor in the boat and was fixing to be blown on the riprap bank. I paddled the best I could but the wind was to strong. I was fixing to have to jump out of the boat to hold the boat off the rocks, but I tried one last time to crank the big motor and thankfully it finally fired up.

If I had an anchor in the boat it would not have been near as bad a situation, and now I always have one in the boat in case a freak thing like that ever happens again.

Regardless of your answer, please check boating laws in the states that you fish. Some states require boats to have anchors.

I have an anchor, but I seldom ever have it in the boat. Mine is a Danforth type anchor. Works really well, but takes up a lot of space.

It's law to have one in NY state. I feel better having it for safety anyway.

I use to carry one in the Cougar FTD. Now with spotlock I don’t think they are really needed as much.

If you carry anchors for fishing you need two or maybe three, I carry one for emergency use only.
