Matt 20:28 "just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Why do they call it a Church Service or Divine Service? Who's service? God's service to us.--God delights in serving us.

Scripture has many verses telling us how and why we should serve God. What's up? The question is--What is the locomotive and what is the caboose? Where is our focus?

Psalm 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.

Luke 19:40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

    Even donkeys speak...

Numbers 22:30 And the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey, on which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Is it my habit to treat you this way?” And he said, “No.”

While important, service to God is still Law. The Law always condemns. Our service to God needs to be continually perfect. Oops.

God's service to us is Gospel. Unable to help ourselves, Christ steps in and takes the lightning bolts hurled at us from God. All the while we're sinning.

In thanks for our justification (past tense-done deal--"It is finished.") we serve God. Even that service done in faith is tainted by sin (Is 64:6) "all our righteous acts are like filthy rags."----Ouch

    Truly, truly a gracious God.

Sometimes a good Lenten hymn is in order:

Stricken, Smitten and Afflicted (based on Is 53)

    3. Ye who think of sin but lightly
    Nor suppose the evil great
Here may view its nature rightly,
    Here its guilt may estimate.
    Mark the Sacrifice appointed,
    See who bears the awful load;
'Tis the WORD, the LORD'S ANOINTED,
Son of Man and Son of God.

    That's service.

How bad is it? We have fallen so far we can't even recognize how far we've fallen. Thank God He tells us. He also provides the cure, Christ.
