    What Ultrex on 520C

I have 2 hours to decide what length ultrex to order for a 2013 520C.

i fish big water for smallmouth but also flip docks and fish heavy cover and have a 52” fortrex on the current boat.

the 52” just looks big in the photos I’ve seen and it looks like some flw guys are running 45”.

will the 45” blow out on Lake Erie or Lake Ontario?

    thanks

A Z520 is a very stable boat, and I always used a 45 inch tm on Erie, running that hull. Depends upon your fishing style, however. The old-school method is drift and drag, in which a trolling motor plays a very small part. The new wave sits on a spot, in any kind of water action, and casts to a specific rock or piece of structure. To do that in open water, you’d be better off with a 52”. I fish too many docks, myself, to feel comfortable with a 52”, and in very skinny water the tm head sticks up an egregious amount. Buddy of mine bought a 52” for his 519 because he didn’t like the occasional blowout on Erie, but found when fishing 18” of water yesterday that he wasn’t fond of the 52” either! Those, my friend, are the breaks of the game. In a 30-inch chop or higher, a 45” will pop out a bit.... The question is, would that be a deal breaker for you?

I have a 45" on mine but I don't fish big water in big weather. If I was out in the big water much more than the little water, I'd go 52" for safety reasons as much as anything.

I would go 52. If too long, you could always have it shortened, although it may not fit quite perfectly in the mount after that.

    You’re used to a 52, go with a 52.

Covers are too tight even with the 45” ultrex - I took mine to a canvas shop to sew in extra material for the ultrex and graphs. Cost $300 and now the cover fits like a glove.

i would recommend the 52 for big water - I had a 45 and had to get a 52 to stop blowing out.
