    Question Running batteries in parallel

I have a 100 amp hour Relion 12vbatery. RB100 I was thinking about getting an RB60 60 amp hour to add to the capacity. Can these two batteries be run in parallel? or do they have to be the same size.

    Thanks for the input

    Good question.

The battery really doesn't know. All it's seeing is 12v, period. Now it might indeed make a difference in how they charge as a unit, especially as you're talking about lithium vs lead acid or AGM. I know batteries will equalize when connected together, so with lesser Ah I'd question it.

I had to connect dual lead acid units in mine to keep up with the demand (and not get low voltage warnings). Now I can go longer than I usually spend in a pocket before the Lowrance will let me know I'm at 11v. Funny thing though that I added a dedicated charger for the duals, and now that they've been there for a season they actually last longer than they did when I first added the second one last year.

Since they're Lithium, there may be issues as I think Lithiums have a charged monitor network built in. I doubt it would be a negative issue if they are charged separately.

If both batteries are the same type, it's OK, even if a different size. You cannot mix types of batteries in parallel.
In series they can be mixed, but each needs it's own charger, set for type of battery.

Lithium batteries generally have charge control circuitry built in to the the battery. Relion is the only place who knows whether the batteries can be parallel connected.
If you have integrity, nothing else matters. If you don't have integrity,
    nothing else matters.

    Holy MOLY!

I've been led to believe that an 80 AH lithium (800 CCA) would crank most outboards.

Although I know the 3.0 Merc, as Don Weed has told us (in the updated thread last fall) that we need......
    -800 CCA
    -1000 MCA
    -180ah
    *
    ,
    or
meet the 135-RC 25 Capacity Rating. *For
    Optimax
models, this rating would be 105ah (and this rating is SELDOM used in the US- recommend using CCA Ratings).

With the 100AH being comparable to a Group 31, and having 1000 CCA that is disturbing news for sure. ESPECIALLY for a $1300~$2000 battery!
Yet if we go by what Don as posted, we'd need a 150AH~200AH just to be safe.

Lithium Ion batteries dot com has the 100 AH rated @ 1000 CCA for $1299.00, the 150 rated @ 1500 CCA for $1899.00, and the 200 rated @ 2000 CCA for *ONLY* $2399.00!

But if that's not expensive enough, the Lithium Pro 110 AH is ONLY $1999.00. YIKES!
Heck, their 80 AH is $1599.00!

As much as I'd LOVE to go with lithium all around, I just can't make that math work. Might, just might be able to swing one as the starting battery, but doing that AND a 36V trolling unit would certainly require selling a kidney.

I've been thinking about going with the X2 Power series once mine need replacing. They're the exact same battery as the Odyessy from the same man that invented the Odyessy and owns the patent, now that he's sold the company and makes them for Batteries and Bulbs under a new name, and @ $100 less expensive.

Hard to make the math work for any boat if you want to try and justify it. If you can swing it get them , that's my thought. Same as the electronics, do we need all this crap to fish. Not really but it sure is nice if you have it.

If you shop a lil you can get the lithiums cheaper then advrtised .. i paid 1000$ for it.. i ran 4 hb onix/solix graphs all day yesterday at 12.8 v.. good consistant power .. only other option would be a North star or x2 at 3 to 400$.. if it last 2 to 3 times as long the math isnt bad.. now if i can just figure out my cold start issue..

How does your lithium pro do in the cold? Will it reliably start a 3l merc?
